Michael Rossi and Jess Conway are swing dance instructors and performers for the greater Washington, DC area. Michael and Jess have taught in Takoma Park and Dupont Circle and are now teaming up to bring the joy of Lindy Hop to The Wharf at Pearl Street Warehouse. This six week series will have you ready for the social dance floor before you know it. The course will cover basic six count Jitterbug and eight-count Lindy/Charleston.

History of Lindy Hop:

The Lindy Hop was born in New York City during the Harlem renaissance in the late 1920s with its roots in jazz, tap, breakaway, and Charleston. A combination of African-American and European partner dances, swing created a lasting impression on American culture and spawned dancing legends such as Frankie Manning, "Shorty" George Snowden, Jewel McGowan, and many more. The popularity of swing fell during the 40s due to WWII and was worsened by a 30% excise tax on dancing nightclubs.

The dance was revitalized in the 80s and 90s thanks to such media as the “Kakhis Swing” commercial for GAP, the movie Swing Kids, and the Broadway show Swing! Currently, swing is thriving is communities in the United States and all over the world. There is a rich, committed, diverse group of dancers that travel, perform, teach, and social dance all in the good name of swing.
