Hackensaw Boys

Roots music shapeshifters Hackensaw Boys make a triumphant return with their new self-titled album due out in June. Known for their energetic live shows, the band have been operating as a sort of musical collective for over two decades now, carving a songline that traverses all genres of American roots music. They have toured nearly constantly, playing festivals all over the world, sharing stages with the likes of De La Soul and Cheap Trick, and even working as Charlie Louvins touring band. They have been featured on NPR and Pitchfork, where Amanda Petrusich aptly described their music as a grassy tornado with brazen punk attitude. Through it all they have adapted their sound, as well as their lineup, to serve their songs with a workman-like ethic.

Hailing from the heart of Appalachia, The Kind Thieves are a musical tour de force that is far greater than simply the sum of its parts. With members originating from all over the Southern West Virginia region, the Thieves pull influences from musical genres spanning from classic rock to funk to bluegrass, wrapped up in a jam-band bow that promises a 100% original and mind-blowing live experience every time they perform.

But jam-band isn’t even a box you can put the Thieves into, with heart-wrenching melodies, jaw-dropping harmonies, and songwriting capability far beyond their years, there is no way of knowing which direction they’ll go next, and no musical stone they’ll leave unturned.

The Kind Thieves debut record ‘Many A Thief’ was released in 2017 and continues to win new fans with it’s unforgettable hooks and sweet storytelling sensibilities.

Born from the rich culture of the Colorado mountains, The Runaway Grooms are bringing a refreshing take on contemporary jam band music. With pocket grooves, syncopated rhythms, and expansive tones, the band captures elements of funk and psychedelic rock while simultaneously celebrating traditional songwriting roots of Americana music. Dueling guitar solos, 3-part harmonies, and a screaming lap steel guitar, combine to create a unique soundscape that takes listeners through an experiential musical journey.

The Colorado based band formed when frontman, Adam Tobin, met guitarist, Zac Cialek, at employee housing for a ski resort. The two were joined by drummer and long time friend, Justin Bissett, shortly after and formed the original lineup of the band. Bassist/vocalist, Zach Gilliam, and keyboardist, Cody Scott, joined the band in November 2019. The addition of the new members helped catalyse the evolution of the band’s sound.

The band released their debut album ‘Tied to the Sun’ in March 2020 , The release was immediately followed by the global Coronavirus pandemic during which the band continued to develop and write music together. The newly written music contributed to the Groom’s sophomore album, Violet Lane, set to be released October 2021.

Melissa Carper

Its been said that not all who wander are lost. Some of our greatest treasures have come from wandering hearts, those who are not afraid to take risks and experience what our world has to offer. On March 19th, singer/songwriter, upright bassist, and lifelong wayfarer Melissa Carper unveiled her new solo effort, Daddys Country Gold. This shimmering 12 song collection of original gems about love and a desire for the simple life mixes melancholy and humor and creates an irresistible pull between laughter and heartache. Having been compared by her listeners to a bluegrass Billie Holiday and a country Janis Joplin, Carpers distinct and pure voice has reached a new strength and maturity in Daddys Country Gold.

Waylon Payne w/ John Hart

A son of country music royalty, a teenaged Baptist preacher turned addict and actor, Payne sings about fathers and sons, faith and addiction, recovery and renewal with devastating clarity. His character-rich collection harks back to a way of telling stories in song that revealed kept secrets and promised mystery. Over his years, Payne has felt the terrible power secrets can hold and learned the transformative value of releasing them. Finally, hes in a place where he can harness that power to create transcendent work. Payne recorded Blue Eyes, The Harlot, The Queer, The Pusher & Me primarily at Southern Ground Nashville, a converted century-old church building just off Music Row that once housed Monument Studios. Paynes mother, country singer Sammi Smith, cut her iconic version of Kris Kristoffersons Help Me Make It Through the Night at Monument. When Payne recorded his vocals, he says, I stood in the same spot she stood and sang while she was pregnant with me.

Winners of the 2021 MerleFest Band Competition, Into The Fog is a genre-jumping string band based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. With its members having various backgrounds ranging from bluegrass, country, rock, to funk, Into The Fog creates a musical melting pot of sounds in an acoustic/newgrass setting. The band is made up of Brian Stephenson(Guitar, Vocals), Winston Mitchell(Mandolin, Vocals), Derek Lane(Bass, Vocals) and Will Maxwell(Fiddle, Vocals).

Originally formed in Wilmington, NC, Into The Fog immediately hit the ground running as a band by heading across the country to compete at the 2018 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition only a few months after coming together. That cross country trip was recorded by friend of the band and videographer Mason Godwin in his documentary Band #7:The Ride to Telluride.

After the Telluride trip, the band got to work playing as much as they could around North Carolina. Becoming a mainstay at over 30 different breweries around the state Into The Fog started to quickly make a name for themselves. Then in November of 2018 the band went to a cabin outside of Waynesville, NC and spent a week recording their debut album Wishin’ It Would Rain, which was released on February 22, 2019.
“The trio crafts a dynamic mix of songs and sounds, from the gypsy feel of “Caawphonation” to the running-from-Johnny-Law feel of instrumental “Cedar Island Rendezvous.”- Brian Tucker(Star News)

With their debut album under their belt Into The Fog started to pick up momentum exchanging brewery gigs for music venues and festivals with opportunities like playing Shakori Hills, Groove in the Garden, FloydFest, MerleFest, and the NC Homegrown Music Festival along with opening slots for national touring acts Sam Bush, Ghost of Paul Revere, and Jon Stickley Trio. Into The Fog solidified their sound further with their 14 track sophomore album Runnin’ Blind and Chasin’ Time which was released in May of 2021.
“While purists might label label their sound as Newgrass, those in attendance respond to the gospel they are preaching and seem perfectly content with the foggy genre, since the sound is so clear”- Donna Davis(The Daily Reflector)

Wil Gravatt has the sensibility of a musician who has explored and performed many styles.  A dichotomous journey from singing drummer  – to frontman for the popular country and western powerhouse Wil Gravatt Band.
A new album project in 2019 paired Wil with Grammy winner Ray Kennedy (producer of such stellar artists as Lucinda Williams,  John Mellencamp, & Taylor Swift) and Wil’s longtime producer Paul Royce Koch.  The album and the band were both WAMA finalists. The results are simply the best work Wil has done. One listen to the fiddle-laden, rollicking  “Carnival Girl” gives you a sense of the talent behind the songwriting, performance, and production of the entire album.

“From the Hank & Lefty school there have only been a handful of artists that I have had the fortune to work with.
Wil Gravatt and Paul Koch make a great team of musical excellence!”
