Smithsonian Folkways & PSW present – Jake Blount (album release)

A powerfully gifted musician and a scholar of Black American music, Jake Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. His 2020 album Spider Tales (named one of the years best albums by NPR and The New Yorker, earned a perfect 5-star review from The Guardian) highlighted the Black and Indigenous histories of popular American folk tunes, as well as revived songs unjustly forgotten in the whitewashing of the canon. Jake Blounts new album, The New Faith, is a towering achievement of dystopian Afrofuturism and his first album for Smithsonian Folkways (coming September 23, 2022).

Born from the rich culture of the Colorado mountains, The Runaway Grooms are bringing a refreshing take on contemporary jam band music. With pocket grooves, syncopated rhythms, and expansive tones, the band captures elements of funk and psychedelic rock while simultaneously celebrating traditional songwriting roots of Americana music. Dueling guitar solos, 3-part harmonies, and a screaming lap steel guitar, combine to create a unique soundscape that takes listeners through an experiential musical journey.

The Colorado based band formed when frontman, Adam Tobin, met guitarist, Zac Cialek, at employee housing for a ski resort. The two were joined by drummer and long time friend, Justin Bissett, shortly after and formed the original lineup of the band. Bassist/vocalist, Zach Gilliam, and keyboardist, Cody Scott, joined the band in November 2019. The addition of the new members helped catalyse the evolution of the band’s sound.

The band released their debut album ‘Tied to the Sun’ in March 2020 , The release was immediately followed by the global Coronavirus pandemic during which the band continued to develop and write music together. The newly written music contributed to the Groom’s sophomore album, Violet Lane, set to be released October 2021.

Eli Cook  was born at the foot of the mountains of Virginia, and with no TV growing up he spent Saturday nights around the radio with local shows and Prairie Home Companion. He picked up the guitar at age 13 after watching his older brother play and began to teach himself. Within two years he was playing solo acoustic guitar for gospel revivals and electric blues in a power trio in local “juke joints.”

A student of several musical tastes, Cook took what he heard on the record player and radio melding it into his own which makes him stand out. At 18 with a bone-shaking growl and bonafide blues guitar chops, he was received by fans and critics as a torch bearer for a slew of historical players, from Son House to Leadbelly to today’s modern players, like Chris Smither and Rory Block.

As the country sounds of Appalachia crept in Eli didn’t flinch:  “It didn’t seem unnatural. It’s what was around me, and I just tried to pick up on everything and everybody, including Doc Watson and Chet Atkins. In fact, hearing Chet fingerpick made me realize I didn’t need a band.”

No slavish dilettante or rusty, dusty blues purist, Cook has internalized his influences, including the rock of Soundgarden and Rage Against The Machine, stirring them into a musical cauldron of authentic, timeless music emanating from deep in his soul.

Eli’s debut, Moonshine Mojo, in 2004 contained mostly choice classic blues covers. In 2007 both the scalding, blues-rocking Electricholyfirewater and the all-original acoustic Miss Blues’es Child made their appearance. Following were Static in the Blood (2009), an outside-the-box studio production mixing R&B and rock, Ace, Jack & King (2011), a grunge blues blast, and the all-original, explosive trio recording Primitive Son (2014) with star-studded cameos. He has toured to national acclaim, holding his own in the company of blues royalty B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Shemekia Copeland and Gary Clark, Jr. In 2015 he was voted #3 on the prestigious UK Blues Matters Writer’s Poll for Favorite International Blues Solo Artist.

Jonathan Sloane is a multi-talented, lifelong musician, instructor, guitarist and lyricist based in Rockville, Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC.  His compositions, tone and lyrical lead guitar playing are deeply rooted in the blues; expanding into R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, funk and soul.

Having played to sold out crowds at both the local and national level with different bands, Sloane is a sought after talent in the Baltimore and Washington, DC music scenes.

He toured and made records with Baltimore native Cris Jacobs from 2016-2020 and now continues to tour with New Orleans singer/songwriter Anders Osborne.

Jonathan writes/arranges and performes with several other projects, each offering a unique outlet for his eclectic influences to shine.

Yellow Dubmarine (http://www.yellowdubmarine.com) is a tribute band that reimagines the beloved Beatles catalogue through syncopation and soul of early rock-steady, dub and roots-rock reggae.  In addition to working out song arrangements, Jonathan contributes vocals and rhythm and lead guitar.  Known for their live performances, in 2011, the band released the well-received studio album, Abbey Dub.  The band has performed across the country, with gigs at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC; Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado; The Mint in L.A.; and The House of Blues in both Houston and New Orleans.

On September 14, 2018, Sloane released his solo record “Alive and Well” which truly showcases a plethora of influences morphed into an original sound.

Tommy Malone (From the Subdudes) w/ Liz Barnez

Tommy Malone has had a musical love affair with fans for over 30 years. As the heart and center frontman of the legendary Americana act The Subdudes, he has carved a path through an ever-changing musical landscape as a gifted singer, player, and songwriter with a distinctive musical voice. OffBeat magazines David Kunian notes,- it’s a crime that Tommy Malone isnt better known around the world. He is a triple threat – beautiful singer, fine songwriter, and killer guitarist. A musician’s musician, Tommy has recorded with Rosanne Cash, Keb Mo, Bonnie Raitt, Shawn Colvin, and Anders Osborne. His songs have been recorded by Joe Cocker, The Band Orleans, and many others. Winners of the 2021 MerleFest Band Competition, Into The Fog is a genre-jumping string band based out of Raleigh, North Carolina. With its members having various backgrounds ranging from bluegrass, country, rock, to funk, Into The Fog creates a musical melting pot of sounds in an acoustic/newgrass setting. The band is made up of Brian Stephenson(Guitar, Vocals), Winston Mitchell(Mandolin, Vocals), Derek Lane(Bass, Vocals) and Will Maxwell(Fiddle, Vocals).

Originally formed in Wilmington, NC, Into The Fog immediately hit the ground running as a band by heading across the country to compete at the 2018 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition only a few months after coming together. That cross country trip was recorded by friend of the band and videographer Mason Godwin in his documentary Band #7:The Ride to Telluride.

After the Telluride trip, the band got to work playing as much as they could around North Carolina. Becoming a mainstay at over 30 different breweries around the state Into The Fog started to quickly make a name for themselves. Then in November of 2018 the band went to a cabin outside of Waynesville, NC and spent a week recording their debut album Wishin’ It Would Rain, which was released on February 22, 2019.
“The trio crafts a dynamic mix of songs and sounds, from the gypsy feel of “Caawphonation” to the running-from-Johnny-Law feel of instrumental “Cedar Island Rendezvous.”- Brian Tucker(Star News)

With their debut album under their belt Into The Fog started to pick up momentum exchanging brewery gigs for music venues and festivals with opportunities like playing Shakori Hills, Groove in the Garden, FloydFest, MerleFest, and the NC Homegrown Music Festival along with opening slots for national touring acts Sam Bush, Ghost of Paul Revere, and Jon Stickley Trio. Into The Fog solidified their sound further with their 14 track sophomore album Runnin’ Blind and Chasin’ Time which was released in May of 2021.
“While purists might label label their sound as Newgrass, those in attendance respond to the gospel they are preaching and seem perfectly content with the foggy genre, since the sound is so clear”- Donna Davis(The Daily Reflector)
